Very few character motivations are as propulsive and immediately involving as revenge, and none lend themselves as well to pulpy, grindhouse-style fun and mayhem. Sushi Girl, the feature directorial debut of Kern Saxton, is a story with revenge right at its center, as a convict emerges from prison after six years for robbery; during all six years he uttered not a peep about his co-conspirators, none of whom spent a day in jail.Upon his release, his compatriots invite this man, named Fish, to a sushi dinner with the meal served on the naked body of a beautiful woman who remains absolutely still, even as the night spirals out of control. The official Sushi Girl trailer and a potentially brutal clip are now online, showcasing the film’s eclectic, geek-friendly cast.
Noah Hathaway, who as a child actor played Atreyu in The Neverending Story, stars as Fish. He’s surrounded by a bevy of awesome character actors, including Tony Todd (Candyman, Final Destination), Sonny Chiba (The Street Fighter, Kill Bill), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), James Duval (Independence Day, Donnie Darko), Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens), Danny Trejo (Machete, Predators), and David Dastmalchian (The Dark Knight). Obviously, the cast has cult credibility to burn.
Everyone is present and accounted for the teaser trailer, which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con:
Mark Hamill is obviously most associated with his three-film role as farmboy-turned-Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, but his frequent vocal work as The Joker on Batman: The Animated Series and all manner of spin-offs proved he’s more than capable of real menace. Hamill puts that often-underutilized villainy to work in this new clip, which manages the rare feat of making chopsticks thoroughly dangerous.
Saxton didn’t just direct Sushi Girl, he also co-wrote it with Destin Pfaff (who has a small role in the film), and he both produced and edited his first feature. We’ll see the fruits of his labor when Sushi Girl hits theaters in 2012.
